SOUND INSTALLATION (The docs have speakers underneath that play sounds from the ocean)
Being born and raised on an island and moving to California, the sea has been part of my reality. Usually, a dock represents something stable and concrete to which a boat can be secured, maintaining it from going adrift. Through this work, I create a dialog regarding the colonial status and paradoxical relationship between Puerto Rico and the United States.
The contradiction between these two docks is analogous to the status between two countries which does not seem to find a resolution from the status quo. I represent visually the repeating dialog of fictional liberty, dependence, and statehood, and how our reality gets distorted as a result of the uncertain status. By looking at this work, I invite the viewer to wonder about this dysfunctional relationship.
